Friedel Stern was born in Lieptzig, Germany in 1916 and immigrated to Palestine in 1936. During World War II she was one of many who volunteered to serve in the British army. She began her career as a caricaturist in the ‘50s in leading newspapers such as Davar and Dvar Hashavua, LaIsha and Bamahane, worked as a book illustrator and taught art in Bezalel Academy of Art mentoring generations of young artists. Stern signed her caricatures with the name Friedel and a always added a small star (in German- Stern). She focused on social issues and in humoristic portrayals of daily life. Her graphic lines were always dynamic and her paintings exuded an optimistic approach combined with a great sense of self-irony. She avoided political topics.
Friedel participated in painting and caricature exhibitions from 1944 to 2006. Her works were exhibited in galleries and museums in Israel and abroad and she received many awards. For many years she was the only woman active in the Israeli field of caricatures. In 1999 Friedel received a lifetime achievement award in the field of caricature and painting by the Council of Women's Organizations in Israel.
